Drain & Sewer Pipe Lining

Drain and sewer pipe lining is one of the fastest, most cost-effective methods of repairing damaged drainage systems without the need for disruptive excavation. Using advanced no-dig technology, a resin-impregnated liner is installed within the existing pipe, creating a seamless, structural pipe inside the original. This restores the integrity of the drainage system, seals cracks and joints, prevents root ingress, and significantly extends the life of the asset—often by 50 years or more.

Compared with traditional excavation and replacement, pipe lining dramatically reduces labour costs, reinstatement expenses, and project timescales. In many cases, repairs can be completed within a single day, allowing businesses to remain operational with minimal disruption. The process also eliminates the need to excavate roads, car parks, landscaped areas, or building interiors, making it an ideal solution for commercial, industrial, and public sector environments.

From an environmental perspective, pipe lining is a highly sustainable repair method. By reusing the existing pipeline, it significantly reduces excavation waste, lowers the demand for new construction materials, minimises vehicle movements and carbon emissions, and protects surrounding infrastructure, landscaping, and habitats from unnecessary disturbance. At Ground-to-Gable Contracts, we combine state-of-the-art lining technology with experienced engineers to deliver durable, long-lasting repairs that reduce costs, minimise downtime, and provide an environmentally responsible alternative to traditional pipe replacement.

Cesspits, Septic Tanks & Sewage Treatment Plants

Choosing the correct wastewater system is essential for properties that are not connected to the public sewer network. At Ground-to-Gable Contracts, we specialise in the design, installation, replacement and maintenance of cesspits, septic tanks and packaged sewage treatment plants, helping homeowners, developers, commercial businesses and landowners remain compliant with current UK environmental legislation while protecting the environment.

Under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 and the General Binding Rules introduced by the Environment Agency, many older systems are no longer compliant. Since 1 January 2020, septic tanks that discharge directly into a watercourse must either be upgraded to a compliant sewage treatment plant or redirected to a suitable drainage field. Property owners have a legal responsibility to ensure their wastewater system is correctly installed, maintained and compliant with current legislation. Failure to do so can result in enforcement action, environmental damage and complications when selling or developing a property.

Cesspits

A cesspit is a completely sealed underground storage tank that simply collects wastewater until it is removed by a licensed tanker. As there is no treatment process, cesspits require regular emptying, making them the most expensive system to operate over the long term. They are generally used only where no suitable drainage field can be installed or where site conditions prevent other solutions.

Advantages

  • Suitable where no drainage field is possible.

  • Simple installation.

  • No discharge to the environment.

Disadvantages

  • Frequent tanker emptying required.

  • Highest ongoing operating costs.

  • Risk of overflow if not maintained correctly.

  • Least environmentally friendly option.

Septic Tanks

A septic tank separates solids from wastewater, allowing partially treated effluent to flow into a drainage field where it undergoes further natural filtration through the surrounding soil. Septic tanks are reliable and cost-effective where ground conditions are suitable but must comply with current legislation.

Advantages

  • Lower running costs than a cesspit.

  • Simple, proven technology.

  • Long service life with routine maintenance.

  • Suitable for many rural properties.

Disadvantages

  • Requires a correctly designed drainage field.

  • Cannot legally discharge directly into a watercourse in most cases.

  • Periodic desludging required.

  • Lower treatment performance than a sewage treatment plant.

Sewage Treatment Plants

Modern packaged sewage treatment plants use biological processes to produce a much higher quality effluent than a septic tank. They are the preferred solution for many new developments and replacement installations because they provide superior environmental performance while complying with current UK legislation.

Advantages

  • Produces significantly cleaner treated water.

  • Lower environmental impact.

  • Complies with current General Binding Rules when correctly installed.

  • Less reliance on large drainage fields.

  • Reduced maintenance and emptying compared with cesspits.

  • Ideal for domestic and commercial developments.

Disadvantages

  • Higher initial installation cost.

  • Requires electrical power.

  • Routine servicing is recommended to maintain peak performance.

Why Upgrade?

Installing a modern sewage treatment system not only ensures compliance with current legislation but also protects local watercourses, groundwater and wildlife by significantly reducing pollution. Modern systems consume less energy, minimise waste, improve water quality and reduce the risk of environmental contamination. For many property owners, upgrading from an outdated septic tank or cesspit can increase property value, simplify future property sales and provide peace of mind that the installation meets current regulatory standards.

At Ground-to-Gable Contracts, we provide a complete service including site assessments, percolation testing, system design, Environment Agency guidance, excavations, installation, drainage field construction, commissioning and ongoing servicing. Our experienced engineers ensure every installation is designed to achieve maximum performance while remaining fully compliant with current UK legislation and environmental best practice.
